During Back to School Season, NH Leaders Blast Kelly Ayotte & Republicans’ Property Tax-Hiking Private School Voucher Scheme

During Back to School Season, NH Leaders Blast Kelly Ayotte & Republicans’ Property Tax-Hiking Private School Voucher Scheme

During back-to-school season, Representative Dave Luneau, Dr. Sean Parr, Manchester Board of School Committee member, and retired public school educator Maxine Mosley slammed Kelly Ayotte and Republicans’ property tax-hiking private school voucher scheme.

Costly Kelly’s disastrous private school voucher scheme has left families across the state with some of the highest property taxes in the nation. On average, taxpayers spend nearly $5,000 per year helping fund private school education for each student enrolled in the voucher program. Meanwhile, the state provides just over $3,000 for a child attending a public school.

Read excerpts from the call below.

State Representative Dave Luneau: “When Kelly Ayotte took office, she couldn’t wait to expand a private school voucher scheme and use taxpayer dollars to literally pay wealthy families to send their children to private school. [...] The bottom line is simple: Kelly Ayotte is making a bad deal even worse. She’s taking taxpayer dollars away from the public schools our kids actually attend, handing out bigger and bigger subsidies, and sticking local taxpayers with the consequences.”

Dr. Sean Parr, Manchester Board of School Committee member: “Kelly Ayotte had every chance to veto this expansion, or to steer toward the affordability she promised Granite Staters. She chose to make the program universal instead — a new, open-ended obligation, drawn from a fund that’s already short, while local taxpayers make up the difference. That isn’t affordability. That’s a cost shifted onto our families.”

Retired public school educator Maxine Mosley: “Granite Staters already pay among the highest property taxes in the nation, and under Republican leadership, local property taxes have skyrocketed by more than one billion dollars over the past ten years. So let me be clear: Kelly Ayotte and New Hampshire Republicans are focused on funneling millions in taxpayer dollars into their overbudget, unaccountable private school voucher scheme. That is far from tax relief; it’s a scam that raises Granite Staters’ taxes to bankroll private schools for wealthy families.”
